The Black Album is the eighth studio album by American rapper Jay-Z, released on November 14, 2003, by Roc-A-Fella Records. It was advertised as his final album before retiring, which is also a recurring theme throughout the songs, although Jay-Z resumed his recording career in 2006. For the album, Jay-Z wanted to enlist a different producer for each song, working with Just Blaze, Kanye West, The Neptunes, DJ Quik, Timbaland, 9th Wonder and Rick Rubin, among others.

The album was Jay-Z's most collaborative to date, featuring ten guest vocalists and a roll call of in-demand producers such as Dr. Dre and Timbaland. Jay-Z then scaled back a bit for Dynasty Roc la Familia (2000), his fifth album in as many years. The album showcased Roc-a-Fella's in-house rappers, such as Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, and Freeway. Jay-Z's next album, The Blueprint (2001), solidified his position atop the New York rap scene. Prior to its release, the rapper had caused a stir in New York following his headlining performance at Hot 97's Summer Jam 2001, where he debuted the song "Takeover. The song features a harsh verse ridiculing Prodigy of Mobb Deep, and Jay-Z accentuated his verbal assault by showcasing gigantic photos of an adolescent Prodigy in a dance outfit.

Jay-Z’s 13th album, 4:44, is the rapper’s most personal record yet. I just walked out of the studio and wanted to go find my wife and hug her. I told him that’s the best song he’s ever written. Everything it covers about being a man, being in a relationship, being a father, how you affect your kids. These things don’t really get touched on in music, especially in hip-hop. No matter how it came out, this album was always going to be mentioned in the same breath as Lemonade, which really raised the bar in terms of the intimacy listeners expected. Was the impact of that album something you guys spoke about?
Three of his albums, Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, and The Black Album, are considered landmarks in the genre, with all of them featured in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Hov has won 21 Grammy Awards from sixty-four nominations, making him the 10th most awarded artist of all-time. Legendary for never writing down his lyrics, JAY-Z’s flow is considered one of the greatest to grace the genre, his wordplay and metaphorical ability is unmatched, and his live shows push the envelope of what it means to be a hip hop artist. JAY-Z has achieved pop stardom with tracks like Empire State of Mind, which in 2009 became his first on the Billboard Hot 100. His 2013 collaboration with wife Beyoncé, Drunk In Love, made it to on the Billboard charts.
Jay-Z was quietly beset by all of the above. His life was indeed changing-in a couple years he’d gone from 560 State Street to a condo (presumably, now, with more than just condoms in it) in New Jersey; A usand in dirty cash to taxable millions. He knew, as well as anybody, that this album would be a tipping point. Jay could be the King of The Post-Biggie Jiggy Era, or simply, the King. Jay-Z had to make The Great American Rap Album. In retrospect, bread crumbs to The Blueprint’s topical and musical themes can be found first on Vol. 3 where he lashed out at oncomers-daring them, inviting violence, reminding listeners of his proximity to the street.
