Back Stabbers is the debut album from the Philadelphia soul group The O'Jays, released in August 1972 on Philadelphia International Records. The recording sessions for the album took place at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1972. This album indeed put the O'Jays on the map with hits like Backstabbers & Love Train, the world would know these guys name for sure after this great debut album. A major turning point for the O'Jays, Back Stabbers took the group to the top of the charts and made them household names in the R&B world. The O'Jays had been paying serious dues since the late '50s, and their perseverance payed off in a major way when the unsettling title song, the infectious "Time to Get Down," and the uplifting "Love Train" became their biggest hits up to that point.
The O’Jays responded to a new era of political consciousness with Back Stabbers, in which burning emotions are couched in a highly sophisticated musical backdrop. The arranged harmonies of the title song and Shiftless, Shady, Jealous Kind of People transform tales of vengeance and betrayal into contagious pop pleasures. (They Call Me) Mr. Lucky is an R&B anthem for street-smart hustlers, but the album’s crown jewel is Love Train, one of the most unabashedly optimistic songs-both musically and thematically-ever set to tape.
